The Associazione Leonardo ONLUS was founded by Marco Ragusa and Victoria Herrett and set up with the help of Katie Palmer and Stefano Fabrizi.

The Charity was created with the objective of helping children and adults with various disabilities. Our initial aim was to create a sensory room within our local community.  A sensory room is specially designed to develop the senses, usually through special lighting, music and touch to be used as a therapy for those with limited communication skills. We hope to continue to create new projects and break down barriers in our society towards disability, so that everyone can have the opportunity to thrive to the best of their ability.

PROJECTS

SENSORY ROOM

Our first project to create a sensory room was a great success and we now have this fantastic room within our hospital “Centro Polifunzionale al Mare” in Lido Venice.  To get our room up and running we had to raise a significant amount of funds. Victoria (Tori) Herrett took on the challenge of a Skydive on the 7th August 2015 and raised a huge 10,000 euro. Since then we have been working very hard to set up the room having to follow hospital protocol, attending meetings and producing written reports. After much turmoil and lots of patience the room is now ready to be used. Our official opening was the 23rd November 2016.

This sensory room will help so many children within our community, like our son Leonardo. The room will open up a whole new world for these children encouraging exploration and fun in a safe environment. Every disabled child has their own  specific needs, therefore, these children will be able to achieve new goals through the use of the sensory room and reach their own individual potential, enabling the whole family to feel supported. We also hope that it will encourage adults to use the facilities by developing confidence as their skills and strengths improve.

We are very excited at presenting this sensory room to our community. Seeing the reaction of those using the room for the first time will be heart warming and joyous and fill us with much pride.

PERSONAL STORY

Leonardo

It was when our son Leonardo was three or four months old that we realised he was not reaching his developmental milestones. Life began to change for us as we took our baby to see various doctors. He underwent many tests and scans until a final diagnosis of Lissencephaly was made at the age of six months. Neither of us had heard of the condition Lissencephaly.

After learning that it was a rare brain disease and discovering how it affects the development of a child we began to realise how life changing Lissencephaly would be to us as a family.

Since then Leonardo’s development has improved greatly due to intense physiotherapy and constant stimulation. He is now three years old and is our happy, cheeky little boy.
